Ortago Penninsular and Moeraki Boulders

Our tour of the Ortago Penninsular started with a drive along the high cliff road over the top to get some stunning views.

We then went down to Portobello and along the coast road to Taiaroa head and the Albatross colony.
There were at least three pairs that we could see nesting.
When the chicks are able to fly they spend the next three years circling the globe, never resting on land until they finally return to where they were born.

At the head is an old military installation which still contains what is known as a disappearing gun.
This gun pops up out of its bunker, fires and disappears again.
It is still in working order.

We carried on Northward up the coast to see the Moraki Boulders.
These unusual geological formations were formed on the sea bed sixty million years ago.
The information panel suggests that they were formed from salts crystallising around a hard core.

We found a small five van free site at Kakanui south near All day Bay to spend the night.
