We then set out to find Bolareienen and its six thousand year old rock carvings. The carving of the moose was obvious whilst
the others took a little while to spot.
The ones on the ground were definitely more worn away, but no surprise
as there was no attempt to stop people from walking all over them.
Carrying
on we headed towards Stiklestad church, (where St Olav was killed in battle),
We
also spotted more moose.
Carrying on up the fv757 to Granfossen to visit the
supposedly longest salmon ladder in Europe.
Rob met the owner of the land who was working with his tractor. Rob asked
permission to stay the night and asked what time we could visit the falls in
the morning, unfortunately the man spoke no English but this fact did not deter
Rob and through a mixture of gestures we got the ok for the night but just a
confused look from our kindly farmer as to the opening times for the falls and
salmon ladder.
Next morning with a spring in his step and
eagerly awaiting the show of wild salmon jumping up the salmon ladder Rob took
off down the lane to the entrance of the falls.
No one was in the cafe to take our money so we dutifully paid for our
tickets using the honesty box system and started the 2km walk down to the
water. The falls were thundering down
but the salmon ladder was dry and looked in a state of disrepair and the so
called ‘salmon studio’ was also locked and empty. At least we had a quiet overnight stop for
the entrance fee!
