Our last day on the German side of the Mosel finds us in Trier. A city with plenty of history. Originally a Roman city there is still plenty of evidence of their settlement here. The town gate, Porta Nigra was built in the 2nd Century, the vast Roman Imperial Baths have been excavated and the Aula Palatina built in 310 AD on such a grand scale that it still dominates over more modern buildings.
The Kurfurstliches Palais has very beautiful façade and lovely ornate gardens.
Our visit is rounded off by a tour of the Dom St Peter and Liebrauenkirche which stand next to each other. The later has some lovely 15th Century wall paintings on the columns.
