Nafplio

Today we visited Nafplio, a town that has been ruled by the Venetians and the Ottomans.  The architecture from these periods still survives.  The town was also the first capital of Greece when it was first liberated.  As you can imagine it was well defended.  There is a Venetian fortress in the bay called Bourtzi.

Most of the streets are paved with marble, as is Pateia Syntagmatos, the main square in the old town.

Around the square is there are two mosques from the Ottoman rule.

At the back of one of the mosques is a Turkish fountain from the second occupation.

The headland is covered with a huge Venetian citadel called Palamidi, it comprising of seven fortresses inside a curtain wall.  The 999 steps to the top of the citadel gives you great views of the old town.

As you can see from the pictures there were a couple of cruise ships in the harbour so the town was alive with the sounds of American and English voices.
