Leonidio Gorge and Geraki

We have moved campsite to camping Zaritsi, which is in between Astros and Leonidio.  The camp is on the bay of Tirou, a large bay with a pebble beach and crystal clear water, great for swimming.

Our first trip out on the scooter took us up the Leonidio Gorge towards Komas.

On our way through the gorge we spotted Elonis Monastery, embedded into the cliff face directly above us.  From our view top it looked impossible to reach by road, but after a series of hairpin bends we reached the back entrance.

After climbing up over the pass we reached the pretty village of Komas, with a lovely church set in the middle of a paved square.

Coming down the mountain on the other side we gained speed on the wide sweeping bends, surprising a fox crossing the empty road.

We took a small road to the left towards Geraki village and managed to find ourselves in the middle of the old settlement on streets definitely not designed for motorised vehicles.  We were so glad that we were on the scooter and not in the van.  Unfortunately the Frankish Castle and old remains of the Byzantine fortified town was closed so after photographing the castle from a distance and one of the 12th Century Byzantine churches we turned the scooter for home.

On the way back we took a slightly different route, this time a bit closer to the coast through the village of Mapi along single track lanes coming back out at the coast overlooking Poulithron Bay.
