Mount Athos and its Monastries

The third finger of Chalkidiki is Athos, this is an autonomous republic ruled by around 2,000 monks that live in the 20 or so Byzantine monasteries.  For women who are not allowed on the peninsular the only way to see this place is by a boat trip from the nearby fishing harbours.  We chose to go from Ouranoupoli.

The weather was stormy but we managed to get to the end of the trip out without getting wet.
From the boat you can see about six of the monasteries. Here they are:-
Docherariou

Xenofontos

Agiou Panteleimonos

Simonos Petras

Grigoriou

Agiou Dionysiou

By the time we reached Mount Athos it had disappeared behind the thunder clouds.  Time for a hasty retreat.
