On arriving at the airport we go straight to Maui to pick up the campervan and then head to Te Kuiti to see our friend Dave. After discussing our travel plans during a great meal of green lipped mussels, we decide to stay for a day just to recover from our flights. The next day we set off on the first leg of our journey across North Island towards the Coromandel Peninsula. We travel through rolling countryside to the Firth of Thames and visit the Miranda Shorebird Centre. There are not that many birds to be seen although a flock of Godwits arrive later. We camp on a freedom campsite right on the waters edge, overlooking the firth towards Coromandel.
