Carew falls, Lake Haupiri and Nelson Creek

Today we head back towards Lake Brunner from Kumara along a white road to Mitchells and Carew Bay on the lakeside.  Our intention was to walk along the shoreline here but beacause of the heavy rainfall our track soon disappeared under a foot of water.

As an alternative we head a kilometre inland and walk up the hillside to Carew falls, which were in full spate.  After this little expedition we return to our vehicle and back to Inchbonnie and around the other side of the lake to Te Kinga.  Rob spent a relaxing hour or so fishing at Iveagh Bay.

Another journey along white roads took us to Bell Hill and up to Lake Haupiri for a bit more fishing.

More white roads and eventually we arrive at Nelson Creek for a night by the river on a community run campsite with an honesty box.

The site is part of an old and extensive gold mine.  From the site there are many walks around the old workings via a wooden swingbridge.

The ground is riddled with very narrow and deep cuttings through the rock down to the rive base.  These cutting were called races and were used to flush out the gold from the rock face down to the river.
