Today we head to Mycenae, a fortified palace complex from 1700 - 1100 BC. This incredible site has yielded up so many artifacts, especially from the royal grave circle, 14kgs of gold was found in this particular grave. Just outside the main wall are the thollos tombs of Clytemnestra
and Aegisthus.
We enter Mycenae via the Lion Gate (13thC BC),
the Royal Grave Circle A is on our right.
We slowly climb up through the complex
to the top citadel and palace of which not much remains.
At the far end of the fortification is the entrance to the water cistern via a covered stairway which unfortunately had been closed off to visitors.
Just down the road from the site is another thollos tomb, called The Treasury of Atreus, (14thC BC). The tomb is known as the tomb of Agamemnon, although it predates him! It is a little different from the others as it has two chambers.
On our route back we discovered little mentioned Larissa castle (1200 AD). It overlooks the town of Argos.
Passing through the town we see the theatre and the Roman Baths.
