Just around the corner from our campsite is the harbour town of Gythio. We park up on the small islet of Marathonas, where there is an 18th century fortified tower called Tzanetakis. This is also a museum but it was closed when we visited. The islet is also famous for being the setting in Homer's writings for Paris and Helen first night together.
From the islet you get a lovely view of the town and harbour. Most of the buildings in the town are 19th century houses with wrought iron balconies.
Some of the balconies are not so safe.
