Pantalica Reserve and river walk
Mothers Day started with a bang as Etna had its biggest eruption of the year. This walk took us along two gorges, the Calcinara and the Anapo. The Calcinara Gorge has a large bat cave and a large necropolis. The walk started with a river crossing, again high waters made this difficult as the stepping stones were submerged. Rob took some convincing but he finally took the plunge! After a second river crossing into the Anapo valley the going got easier as we followed an old narrow gauge railway line, now converted into a cycle track. Everywhere was a picture as the flowers were in full bloom. The cliffs were perforated with rock tombs and rock dwellings including a Byzantine Rock Chapel. The walk finally ascended the cliffs up to a Bronze age palace, Anaktoron - talk about a walk through history!
